A Thank You Note to Mom: One of God’s Greatest Creations

Mothers were honored throughout the United States yesterday.

As mothers arise form their beds today, the aroma of flowers wafts through the air in many homes. Cards wishing them a “Happy Mother’s Day” may greet them as they wander about.

Yesterday, mothers throughout the country, including Upper Milford Township, were honored for…simply being a mom. Some may have been treated to breakfast in bed, a delicious lunch or a scrumptious dinner. Others received flowers, a greeting card or maybe a phone call or visit from a son and/or daughter.

Mothers are one of God’s most precious creations. He made them in all different shapes, sizes, ages and colors. But they have one thing in common: they love their children unconditionally.

They don’t even have to be the birth mother. Some have adopted children, foster children and, as in my case, friends of their children who call them “mom.” I have a dozen or so “sons” who have stayed overnight, eaten meals, discussed problems and even enjoyed some holidays with us.

Moms have a great ability to pardon a child’s errors. There seems to be an endless supply of forgiveness somewhere deep in a mother's heart. Whether it be a spilled glass of red juice on a white tablecloth or a trip to the police station to reclaim a son or daughter, maternal absolution is usually near.

As a child, we don’t always appreciate our mothers. We often think they are ordering us around — “do this, don’t do that, do as I say.” And we always had chores to do. I remember thinking that I will never do or say this stuff to my kids.

Then it was my turn. I was the mom. When my boys were growing up, I thought I was hearing my mother in the background. But…it was actually me saying and doing what she did, not her!

Now, my sons and daughters-in-law can often be heard saying the same words I used.  “Just do it because I said so,” I hear them say to their children — my grandchildren. Gee, I wonder where they learned that!

And mothers make many, many sacrifices for their children. We trade the quality clothes for diapers and bottles, a good night’s sleep to care for a sick child, gourmet meals for mac & cheese, and a night out with hubby to help with homework.

Some have even sacrificed their careers, or put them on hold, to raise a family. A mom could never be paid for all the work she does. Mothers are care-givers, teachers, nurses, cooks, custodians, housekeepers, chauffeurs, shoppers, organizers, disciplinarians, and more.

Being a mother is not a nine to five job…it is 24-hours, 7-days-a-week. The night-time “mom’s ear” wakes her at the slightest sniffle, cough or whimper; at which time she heats a baby bottle, changes a diaper, comforts a sick child or one who just had a bad dream.

Thanks, mom. Just for being my mother and being there.
