Nine of the Lehigh Valley region’s most innovative and influential companies are testing, tasting, and re-tasting in preparation for the Da Vinci Science Center’s Ice Cream Wars 6.0 competition – one of the area’s most colorful and popular culinary events.
The nine Da Vinci Science Center partner companies – including defending champion PPL Corporation – are perfecting unique ice cream recipes that will be activated with liquid nitrogen before visitors’ eyes during the competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Center visitors will have the important and pleasurable task of tasting the ice cream concoctions and voting for their favorites. The corporate team that collects the most votes wins the annual Ice Cream Wars Championship – complete with a trophy to keep for a year and twelve months of bragging rights. Teams also decorate their stations, distribute gifts, dress colorfully, and cheer enthusiastically throughout the competition. Judges’ Awards are given for spirit, creativity, and other fun attributes.

Ice Cream Wars is a sweet chemistry lesson for visitors. The liquid nitrogen, which stands at negative 320 degrees Fahrenheit, chills the ice cream ingredient mixes immediately while it warms and evaporates rapidly. The resulting creamy treats are safe to eat in approximately five minutes. Ice Cream Wars 6.0 also will be presented as a public program for the Da Vinci Science Center’sYear of Innovation.
Each Ice Cream Wars team works with a coach from the Da Vinci Science Center staff in advance of the competition. Some teams have been planning and practicing since Oct. 2013, and showing more intensity for the competition than ever.

Seeking to dethrone PPL as Ice Cream Wars Champion as of Dec. 20, 2013, are 401! Creative, a division of Weidenhammer Services Corporation; ATAS International; Avantor Performance Materials; B. Braun; Just Born; LSI Corporation; The Morning Call Media Group; and WFMZ 69 News. Ice Cream Wars 6.0 will be third time in which the competition will be filled completely with partner corporate teams.

The Da Vinci Science Center’s Year of Innovation, which continues through Sept. 2014, highlights careers in all scientific and technical fields and inspire tomorrow’s professionals to embrace the qualities that drive innovation – including creativity, collaboration, process skills, and problem-solving abilities.
