East Penn Superintendent 'Confident' School Can Welcome Walkers

When school starts on Aug. 26, students will be able to walk to Willow Lane Elementary safely,  East Penn school superintendent Thomas Seidenberger told school board members Monday night.

"I’m confident everything is going to be ready," he said, speaking of work done both by the school district and Lower Macungie Township.

On Tuesday, some of the last pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. The district will install three signs—two handicap, one student drop off—and began training a new group of crossing guards.

Previous work included installing crosswalks, curb cuts and putting up warning signs.

The East Penn School Board voted last year to defund bus transportation for students who live near Willow Lane, which school officials have said was designed to be "a walking school."

A number of worried parents had gone to the district since then to discuss the lack of signage or traffic control devices near the Sauerkraut Lane school.
