LMMS Tries to ‘Take Sting Out of Sandy’ for NJ Students

Super Storm Sandy may be gone, but, even here in the Lehigh Valley, her impact is clearly not forgotten.

In fact, students at Lower Macungie Middle School are doing their part to “remember” Sandy and the devastation the storm caused up and down the east coast through an ongoing service project dubbed “Take the Sting Out of Sandy.”

Following the storm, LMMS students suggested to school administrators that LMMS do something to help out students in New Jersey, according to a press release from East Penn School District.

This suggestion ultimately evolved into an ongoing building-wide project in which LMMS has been collecting gently used middle school and elementary school level books to donate to the schools of the Toms River, N.J./Ocean County, N.J. region.

More than 1,400 books have been collected so far, East Penn reports.

In addition to collecting books, the LMMS students created inspirational laminated bookmarks, and sent handwritten/typed letters of encouragement to the students in New Jersey.

Plus, LMMS is selling specially designed T-shirts to benefit school relief efforts in the Toms River area. LMMS students and faculty wear the shirts on “special” days at their school.

LMMS is still collecting books and selling T-shirts - $7 each - as part of the “Take the Sting Out of Sandy” relief initiative. If anyone from the East Penn community wants to drop off books or buy a shirt, they can e-mail LMMS Assistant Principal Rodd Luckenbill at rluckenbill@eastpennsd.org.
