Treasures Abound in Closets and Drawers

Housecleaning finds sometimes end up as yard sale items.

The temperatures are finally beginning to stay on the warmer side. Some days we can even open the windows and smell the wonderful aroma of springtime.  It’s also the time to rid the house of unwanted clutter and dirt that seems to creep in during the winter months.

As I drive through Upper Milford Township on weekends, I am starting to see the fruits of people’s labors—yard sales, garage sales, and barn sales.  Sometimes it is one family. Other times it is a group of neighbors selling their “treasures” to those seeking good deals. And then there is the person selling no items…just some hot dogs and drinks for those of us who get hungry and/or thirsty while shopping. Bless them!

Did you know you can advertise your yard sale, garage sale or barn sale on Emmaus Patch for FREE?

I remember making the rounds on Saturday mornings when my boys were young and going from sale to sale for hours. It was my time to do something with no kids and a way for dad to have some quality time with them kids. I would hopefully regain my sanity and spend some money, too.

It was, and still is, amazing to me what items can be found at a yard sale.  Blocks, blankets, Lincoln Logs, toy cars, dolls, bikes, books, stuffed animals, furniture, clothes… The list goes on and on. Just about anything and everything can be found; and some items are hardly used.

Of course, these sales are usually due to someone moving or housecleaning.  I am currently in the process of the latter.  And I wonder…where does all this stuff come from? It wasn’t there a few months ago, was it?

There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, a basement, two-car garage and an attic to venture through. Whew…I’m tired just thinking going through boxes and the cleaning to come.

This year I decided to clean the drapes and curtains. I think the last time I took them down and washed them was…uh…maybe about 10 years ago. I don’t think you really want to know what they looked like at the top. But after being washed, I believe they are a different color!

Then, it was off to the playroom/bedroom for the grandchildren. It’s time to rid the toy box of “baby” toys. The boys now play with trucks, cars and Legos. The girls enjoy dress-up, dolls and the Legos they manage to swipe from the boys.

Next on the list is the attic. I took a look at it the other day to see what is in store for the next few days—or weeks. So far, I’ve seen baby items, very large stuffed animals, camping equipment, dishes and more.

I think I need to schedule my own yard sale…under the butternut tree.
