Zachary Good, clarinetist, Woodland Hills 2009,

Zachary Good, clarinetist, Woodland Hills 2009 graduate, will perform a recital on June 8th, 7:00 pm, First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, 605 Morewood Avenue, Pgh, 15213

Zach’s love for music was fostered while performing in the Woodland Hills High School’s award-winning musicals, beginning at age 8 with The King and I. He went on to appear in 5 more shows. Zach began taking clarinet lessons at the age of ten with Eric Nelson of Swissvale. His interest in studying and performing classical music was solidified after joining the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2007, and winning the McKeesport Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, 2008, which included a performance with the orchestra.

Zach has recently graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Clarinet Performance, studying with Richard Hawkins. While at Oberlin, he has performed in a variety of ensembles, including both Oberlin Orchestras, the Contemporary Music Ensemble, Oberlin's Sciencemble, and the Oberlin Renaissance Recorder Consort. He has spent summers at the National Orchestral Institute, the Round Top Festival Institute, and the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute. In January 2013, Zach performed with the Oberlin Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, receiving critical acclaim in the New York Times for his play as the first chair in Stravinsky’s Firebird. This summer he will attend the Aspen Music Festival as a member of the Aspen Contemporary Music Ensemble. Furthermore, he has performed in master classes for Yehuda Gilad, Larry Combs, Ricardo Morales, and Michael Wayne. Other influential figures include Ron Samuels of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and bassoonist George Sakakeeny of Oberlin. In addition to his clarinet major, he received a Minor in historical performance on the baroque recorder under the guidance of Kathryn Montoya. Next year, Zachary will attend DePaul University's School of Music to study with Larry Combs for a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance.
