Affordable housing options for individuals with disabilities and/or special needs is the topic of an upcoming program co-presented by Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JF&CS) and Jewish Residential Services (JRS) as part of the educational series AIM: Support for Families of Individuals with Special Needs.

The presentation will be held Monday, April 20th from 6 – 8 p.m. at Rodef Shalom, located at 4905 Fifth Avenue in Shadyside.

Chuck Keenan, Housing Coordinator for the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS), will elaborate on affordable housing options, including Section 8, subsidized housing, low-income housing tax credits and homeless resources for people experiencing a housing crisis. At DHS, Keenan is responsible for coordinating all aspects of Allegheny County’s housing initiatives within the agency, including the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness, the Mental Health Plan, the Jail Re‐integration Plan and others, as well as working with organizations outside of DHS in order to fully utilize affordable housing resources for DHS consumers. Keenan has more than 15 years of experience working in the affordable housing and disability fields.

“Housing is a key issue in our community for individuals with disabilities and their families. We hope families and those with special needs or disabilities will come away from this presentation with a concrete sense of the current housing options that exist in our community, as well as information on new and unconventional ways to find affordable, safe housing for loved ones,” said Linda Marino, resource coordinator at JF&CS. “Above all, our goal is to empower family members and individuals with practical strategies to utilize when transitioning to independence in a community setting.”

The presentation is free and open to the community and includes a light kosher meal at 6 p.m. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call 412-325-0039 by April 15th.
