How Do You Know... If You Are a Mystic?

Discover the Christian root of mysticism and if you too are growing to become a modern day mystic.

How do you know if you are a mystic?  And, what is mysticism?  The term has been used in various ways throughout history.  The Christian concept originated in the 2nd Century with the Greeks who used the term Mystikos. The Latin word Spiritualitas comes to us from the 4th Century.  By the 6th Century we can read the writings of what was then called Mystical Theology.  In the 17th Century the word Mysticism was adopted.

My understanding of mysticism is this: “The inner and hidden realization of spirituality through a transforming consciousness of God‘s immediate presence." Mysticism is the goal of spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation.  Mysticism is personal, but not individualistic because it is grounded in community.

Today, I am growing to be more of a mystic than I ever thought possible.  As a mystic of sorts, I have a personal spiritual commitment and an active discipline of meditation and reflection. I strive to live in humble ways and to live out what has been entrusted to me in concrete compassion.
