How Do You Know.... Who You Are?
Dr. Brown asks the question, do you know who you are? What would happen if your institutional identity was gone?
Even for individuals who know who they are, this is a time in work places when identities are being sorely tested.
With dwindling budgets, merging of departments, downsizing, cutting of staffs and shifts in power, some of us live in terror of what will happen to us if our institution or role within the institution disappears. Our identities are so tied up in titles and placement, offices we hold and honors bestowed and, for that matter, simple job security, that we may literally die if our institutional identities are taken away. In these difficult times we need to pause, go inward, and acknowledge our own worth. We need to find the strength to be who we are instead of who we think we are supposed to be.Â
So, this week I ask, "Do you know who you are?" Â This is a primary question for we who wish to live by the Spirit. Who you are does not depend on what you do or your title, function or position. Who you are does not depend on their power versus your power. Who you are is based in your own power. You are of value simply because you are. Â
