How Do You Know—When it is Time to Fast?

Why not try "fasting" over the holiday seasons? What do you need to step away from for a time? Try fasting and you'll be surprised at what fills the space.

"Fasting" may seem a strange blog to post during Thanksgving week.

I'm not talking here about fasting as in giving up food. Instead of food, think of fasting as stepping away from those things that overwhelm you, those things that pollute your day. Think of fasting from things that separate you from yourself, God, and other people. During this coming holiday season, plan to take conscience breaks.

Give yourself permission to have time alone. Take time, even 15 minutes apart, and make the choice to "fast." You might fast from the television or radio, news reports or the telephone. I find it especially important, from time to time, to fast from people. I need time alone, and I need to step away from even those closest to me, if I am to continue to love them.

In this time of fasting, live in the spaciousness of the moment. Try fasting and you'll be surprised at what fills the space. Try it and tell me what you experience.
