Local Lung Cancer Survivor Joins Walk on Father’s Day

Carolyn Olbum, a Squirrel Hill resident, was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 68. Her cancer was discovered after her 15-year-old grandson suggested she see a doctor about a cough. She now refers to it as her “life-saving cough.”

Carolyn, cancer free for almost eight years now, is not only a wife, mother and grandmother but also an accomplished sculptor and artist with work shown in galleries nationally.

She will be walking along with family and friends at the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership’s inaugural “Free to Breathe” 5K/1-mile walk in Pittsburgh on June 16.

For more information about the event on Sunday, please see the media advisory below.

PITTSBURGH JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST LUNG CANCER
Inaugural Free to Breathe 5K/1-Mile Walk Raises Awareness and Critically Needed Funds

WHAT: The first ever Free to Breathe Lung Cancer 5K/1-mile walk in Pittsburgh will take place on Sunday, June 16 (Father’s Day) to raise awareness and critically needed funds for the fight against lung cancer. Lung cancer survivors, fighters, family members and friends will join together to walk for a cause.

Lung cancer kills more U.S. men and women than any other cancer. Every day, the disease takes the lives of 450 people in the U.S. which equates to about 19 Americans every hour or 1 every three minutes. Perhaps the most sobering statistic of all is that the five-year survival rate for lung cancer is only 15.7% and this number has remained unchanged for more than 40 years – greatly due to the relative lack of research funding.

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership, proceeds from Free to Breathe will benefit lung cancer research, education and awareness programs.
