Urban Farm Stands Bring Fresh Produce to Low-Income Families
Grow Pittsburgh operates two farm stands—one in North Point Breeze-Homewood and the other in Braddock—to bring affordable produce to areas that are underserved.
Two farm stands, operated by Grow Pittsburgh, have the goal of getting fresh, local vegetables into the hands of those who otherwise couldn't afford it.
The Shiloh stand, located at Homewood Avenue and Thomas Boulevard, is open Thursdays. The Braddock stand, operated under a tent next to Bell's Market on Braddock Avenue, Braddock, is open Saturdays
The purpose of the stands is to help provide communities access to fresh, locally grown and affordable produce. While Grow Pittsburgh is grateful for the support of the general public, both these farm stands cater to primarily low to moderate-income families and those who are SNAP, FMNP and WIC beneficiaries. Also, new this year is the ability to use the EBT system at both of the farm stands. Both stands will close near the end of October.

"We don't want people to feel they can't shop there, but also want them to be aware that as a nonprofit our primary purpose in running the stands is to get produce to folks in underserved communities," Grow Pittsburgh Executive Director Julie Butcher Pezzino said.
