5 Key Coronavirus Metrics Up In Delco As Cases Near 16,000

New cases, incidence rates, hospitalizations, positivity rates, and people with COVID-like illness at emergency rooms have all increased.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — Five of the six metrics the Pennsylvania Department of Health tracks on a county level increased in Delaware County.

The metrics are part of the state's Early Warning Monitoring System Dashboard, which paints a comprehensive picture of the impact and status of the virus in the community and the healthcare system at large. The most recently published data covers the seven days from Nov. 6 to Nov 13.

Here are the six metrics, and how Delaware County fares in the most recent data reporting:

  • Newly reported confirmed cases: The county reported 1,320 cases over the seven-day period, which is 472 more than the 828 the week before.
  • Incidence rate per 100,000 residents: The incidence rate of the virus per 100,000 residents is now at 233.7 for the seven-day period, up from 150.2 the previous seven days.
  • Average daily COVID-specific hospitalizations: The average daily COVID-specific hospitalization rate went up to 73.4 last week, from 52.1 the week before.
  • PCR testing positivity rate: The percent positivity rate on all coronavirus tests in Delaware County also went up last week. The PCR testing positivity rate is up to 9.9 percent, well above the threshold for what's considered "concerning" at five percent. The week prior, it was 7.5.
  • Percent of hospital emergency department visits due to COVID-like illness: In Delaware County, 2 percent of visits to the ER are due to COVID-like illness, up slightly from 1 percent the week before.
  • The average number of patients on ventilators: This number was the only to have decreased over the past week. Most recently, the figure was 4, which was a decrease from 4.7.

Delaware County's total case count is nearly 16,000 with 15,966 cases identified to date. Two hundred twenty cases were identified Friday.

The county's death toll stands at 831.

The recovery rate in Delco is 73.57 percent and the number of negative tests in the county stands at 143,465.

In nursing homes and long term care facilities, 631 people have died and 2,836 cases have been identified. Of the county's 62 facilities, 31 have active outbreaks.
