Golfweek — part of USA Today — defines classic courses as layouts that opened before 1960, when course architects interfered less with natural landscapes, according to the publication. Courses that opened afterwards are considered "modern."

Rankings are based on scores given by Golfweek's course-rating panel, which has hundreds of members continually evaluating each location.

Merion Golf Club has an East and West Course, with the East consistently rated among the nation's best.

The course, which opened in 1912, received an average rating of 8.96.

Merion Golf Club has hosted five men's U.S. Open Championships, most recently in 2013. The major is slated to return there in 2030, followed by the U.S. Women's Open in 2034.

The club will also host the U.S. Amateur Championship from Aug. 10-16. Related: Several Roads To Shut Down In Haverford Twp. For Amateur Golf Championship
