I’m a fan of Houzz, a site that features great home design ideas. I also spend a lot of time working with fixer-upper buyers (including my husband), which means I think a lot about kitchen rehabs and in particular, kitchen countertops. Houzz recently put out a nice article about countertop options, and the comments section is full of informative comments from homeowners.

This Old House also has a thorough piece on many types of countertops, natural and man-made. It’s in a slideshow format, which takes a lot longer to click through, but it covers quartzite, engineered stone, limestone and more:http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20669665,00.html

Finally, for the real DIYer, there is the concrete countertop. My husband built molds and cast our countertops himself, and the results look a lot like soapstone but without the frequent chipping. Concrete can be cast in a variety of colors and designs. Just something else to consider! http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-build-a-concrete-countertop/index.html
