CHESTER, PA — A Delaware County man has been charged with the murder of his own son, authorities said Wednesday.

Adolphus Dwayne Smith, 48, of Chester, has been charged in connection with the murder of Rashad Sabree, 20, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer and Chester City Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky said.

Smith is accused of shooting and killing his son on Feb. 15 and was arrested in Upper Darby by Delaware County detectives and Philadelphia Police.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. that night along the 500 block of East 22nd Street in Chester for a report of shots fired in the rear alley.

Police were told a person was shot in a home on that block and found a person, later identified as Sabree, lying on the ground bleeding and unconscious. Sabree was taken Crozer hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities determined Smith was Sabree's father, as well as the suspect in his murder.

"It is inconceivable to think that a father could take his own son’s life," Gretsky said. "As with any murder victim this is a complete tragedy for the family, and we will seek certain justice."

Smith was arraigned and denied bail. He was transported to George W. Hill Correctional Facility where he will await a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 8.
