Delco COVID Cases Nearly Double, Hospitalizations Down 50 Percent

The latest data on the coronavirus's impact in Delaware County is a mixed bag, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — The most recent data on the coronavirus in Delaware County brings both good and bad news, as cases are up but hospitalizations are down.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the county's new cases increased from 51 the week ending July 16 to 96 this week.

Additionally, the incidence rate per 100,000 residence increased from 9 to 16.9 over the past week.

Despite those increases, hospitalizations for the virus had dropped by about half.

Since July 16, when an average of eight people were being treated in Delaware County hospitals for the virus, the average number of hospitalized coronavirus patients dropped to 4.1.

State health officials report none of those patients are on ventilators, which remains unchanged from last week.

The county's positive testing rate went up, albeit slightly, from 1.1 percent to 2 percent over the past seven days.

Lastly, the average number of people showing up to hospitals with coronavirus-like illnesses went down slightly from 1.2 percent to 1.1 percent since last week.

As of Friday, 271,643 Delaware County residents have been fully vaccinated and 30,472 have been partially vaccinated, according to state health officials.

Delaware County, to date, has had 45,959 positive coronavirus tests and 264,349 negative tests. A total of 1,470 people have died from the virus in Delaware County, as of Friday, per the Chester County Health Department.
