Du Jour: Deliciousness Any Day of the Week

This week food writer Clara Park reviews Du Jour in Haverford.

When I told my friend I was going to review Du Jour in Haverford Square she squealed and exclaimed, "I love that place!" so naturally, she got invited to come along. We arrived for a late lunch on a particularly sunny Saturday.

We had the Thai pasta salad ($9) and the salmon burger ($13) for lunch. The Thai pasta salad was pleasing to look at and eat. The sweet and savory peanut sauce paired perfectly with the well cooked noodles, carrots, greens and super crunchy crostini. This cool salad would make an ideal lunch in warmer weather. My only caveat is that it's quite large but never fear, it tastes just as good the next day.

The salmon burger and french fries was excellent. It took a while to come out but was well worth the wait. Each bite was succulent and well seasoned, the lemon caper remoulade a nice tart contrast to the richness of everyone's favorite omega-3-loaded fish. The brioche bun was a nice elegant counterpart to the salmon burger and the french fries were fantastic. They seemed to be coated with something that made them extra crisp and tasty. I could have eaten a whole cart full of them.

The coffee they serve is Illy (yay!) which makes for a great morning cup or a refreshing iced coffee on hot days. You can also order any other caffeinated permutation you want. There is bottled water, Coke, Mightly Leaf teas, freshly squeezed juices and a full bar with a great cocktail list to go with it. Du Jour really is a one stop shop for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and whatever wets your whistle.

For a sweet ending, there is Capogiro gelato and sorbetto as well as a variety of baked goods. We had the lime-cilantro and lemon sorbettos as well as coconut gelato. The lime cilantro sorbetto was delicious and quite herbaceous. It actually made me want a margarita, strangely enough. The lemon sorbetto was tart and refreshing but the show stopper was the coconut gelato. Creamy and packed with coconut flavor, one bite and you were transported to a tropical isle.

The staff is friendly and enthusiastic. Everyone I encountered was helpful and knowledgeable. My friend and I had a wonderful lunch there and despite her warning that it was a hangout for "Richie McRichersons," I felt like the crowd was varied in terms of age, socio-economic status and gender.

There were plenty of kids, teens, adults, students and grandparents. It wasn't the most ethnically diverse place I've been to, but where on the Main Line is?

The decor is warm and inviting. Plenty of open space and earth tones add to the ambiance. I like the large windows that you can gaze out of for prime people watching.

In closing, "du jour" is French for "of the day" and is used in menus to signify something made for a particular day, e.g. soup du jour. Du Jour in Haverford offers tasty items and beverages made every day of the week to be enjoyed on whatever day you please, whether you're a Richie McRicherson or not.
