First Snow of 2012 Blankets Haverford Township

After a few inches of snow fell overnight in Haverford Township, creating slippery but not overly dangerous conditions on the roads Saturday, things were more or less business as usual after some digging out in on back roads by late afternoon.

After the accumulation of snow in the early morning hours, those shoveling out—and those who had to get out and about in their vehicles—found a surprising weight to the snow, which had iced over by mid-morning. Main roads were plowed and sanded fairly early, but were slippery until midday. Back roads remained icy throughout.

The snow had stopped by 11 a.m., but a light, freezing rain started to come and go after 1 p.m., putting a damper on an otherwise joyful sledding outing above the College Avenue pond at .

Conditions will worsen on the roads, as the National Weather Service is calling for a low of 21 degrees for Saturday night.

Sunday’s forecast calls for increasing clouds, with a high of 40 and rain Sunday evening, with a low of 37.

By Monday, all the snow could be gone, with showers likely and a high of 54 degrees.
