It was 1 of 4 hospitals in eastern Delco that has shut down in the last few years.

DREXEL HILL, PA — A fire broke out Tuesday night at the former Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill.

Firefighters were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. to the building at 501 Landsdowne Ave. They discovered smoke coming from the maintenance area, according to Upper Darby Professional Firefighters.

It was among four eastern Delco hospitals owned by now-defunct Crozer Health that has closed in recent years, leaving the area a desert for emergency care.

The building is set to be demolished later this year. It will become the site of a new career- and technical-education center for the Upper Darby School District.
