To make rain gardens, the depressions are filled with a mixture of sand, topsoil, and compost that filters water. Typical rain gardens are six to nine inches deep.

Water runoff is collected from paved and other hard surfaces and directed into gardens, watering native plants that provide food and habitat for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Native plants do not require fertilizer and help filter pollutants.

They will also have the chance to hone skills by joining rain garden builds or apprenticing. Apprentice opportunities include assessing potential locations and designing rain gardens.
