Haverford Township Gets Hybrid Vehicle Grant

HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, PA — Haverford Township was recently approved for a grant that will help it replace a gas-powered vehicle with a hybrid electric vehicle.

State Reps. Greg Vitali and Mike Zabel announced Monday a $7,500 grant for Haverford Township has been approved through the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program.

The grant provides Haverford Township with $7,500 for the purchase of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to replace a gasoline vehicle.

"Haverford Township has made the decision to acquire a vehicle that burns less fuel than a traditional car, and it will emit fewer harmful emissions, pollutants and toxins," Zabel said. "Besides the environmental benefits, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can be powered strictly on electric battery power for 20 or more miles before it begins running on traditional fuel, which will help the township save on fueling costs."

Plug-in hybrid vehicles work similar to hybrid vehicles, but plug-in hybrid vehicles have larger battery capacity – allowing the plug-in hybrid to be powered strictly by electricity for longer distances.

"This new hybrid vehicle is one small step we can take to start to shape a future where we all are environmentally conscious," Vitali said. "I am happy to see Haverford Township receiving this money and that we can lead by example."

The Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program helps to create new markets for alternative fuels in Pennsylvania. An investment is being made, not only in alternative fuels but the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles, fleets and technologies.
