Man Charged With Murder, Attempted Murder In Upper Darby Shooting

Authorities said David Savage shot and killed his girlfriend before firing at several people and police at 69th Street station Thursday.

UPPER DARBY, PA — Murder, attempted murder, and other charges have been filed in connection with a shooting spree that occurred Thursday at SEPTA's 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby.

David Savage, 45, has been charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault and related offenses, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said Friday.

Savage is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend, Latoya Gary, in her apartment on the 7000 block of Terminal Square in Upper Darby while her family was present, Stollsteimer said.

"This was a brutal, brutal murder," he said. "He put a gun to his girlfriend's head, shot her in the head and killed her, while she was in her apartment with her family members there."

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Tim Bernhardt said after the fatal shooting, Savage left the apartment and shot a man in the back, who suffered non-life threatening injuries then fired at people entering the transportation center, as well as two SEPTA police officers who fired back but did not strike Savage.

Those officers took Savage into custody.

Stollsteimer called the SEPTA officers heroes for taking fire, returning fire, and then apprehending Savage.

Bernhardt told Fox he believed Savage was attempting a "suicide by police."

Stollsteimer thanked Upper Darby and SEPTA police for their work in bringing Savage into custody.
