Virus Positivity Rate Drops Below 9 Percent In Delco

Last week, Delaware County saw a 23-percent decrease in new coronavirus cases from the previous week, which had 1,465 new cases.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — New coronavirus infections in Delaware County dropped to below 9 percent last week, even as the county's death toll since the beginning of the pandemic near 1,100.

Last week, there were 1,125 new cases of the coronavirus in Delaware County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. That's a 23-percent decrease from the previous week, which had 1,465 new cases.

The county's test positivity rate also dropped below 0percent last week, hitting 8.2. That's down from 9.9 percent the week before.

Health officials say a rate of 5 percent or lower is a sign that the virus is largely under control.

A total of 137 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus in Delaware County as of Friday, with 15 on ventilators.

The incidence rate of coronavirus in Delaware County is 199 per 100,000 people.

With those numbers considered, five of the six key metrics regarding the coronavirus in Delaware County have dropped. The only metric that did not see a decrease was percent of hospital visits due to coronavirus-like illness, which remained at 1 percent from the previous week.

As of Tuesday, 19,372 people have received their first dose of the vaccine and 3,566 have been fully vaccinated in Delaware County.

The county is opening the Delaware County Wellness Center in Yeadon Wednesday morning. The center will serve as a vaccination site and vaccine storage site.

To date, Delaware County has seen 34,121 cases of the virus and 1,086 coronavirus-related deaths.

The county's recovery rate sits at 81.87 percent.
