February is a Time for Reinvention

The missed opportunity for new year's resolutions turns into a renewed focus on reinvention and healthy living.

As I watched the confetti drop on the fans at the Super Bowl it reminded me of New Year’s Eve and the confetti dropping on the millions of people around the world as we welcomed 2013. Which then brought to mind resolutions--those made, those broken and the few that were kept.

I am not usually one to make resolutions. I usually just don’t feel I need to start the year with something at which I may not succeed. But as February settles in, I do think of the missed opportunities resolutions may have brought.

The typical resolution many of us make, and sadly break, is to lose weight, get healthy, fit into “that dress” in the closet.

This year I am focusing on reinvention and invigoration instead of resolutions. It is time to shift to more tangible goals that will hopefully lead to an early spring filled with sunshine and goals attained!

My reinvention actually began last spring when I joined a CSA (community supported agriculture) and vowed to eat healthy and adopt a healthy lifestyle. As winter settled in and the farm share ended for the season, so did my resolve to eat healthy. With winter, came bulky sweaters and lots of layers. There were days I felt like a bear fattening up for the winter hibernation. Sadly, this bulking up leads to distress as spring approaches and the layers start to be peeled off.

Last week I mailed my check for the upcoming farming season. This was a reminder to renew my commitment to eating healthier and adapting a healthy lifestyle. With this check I decided to jump back onto the lifestyle membership in a CSA can invoke. I resolve to make use of winter veggies, healthy snacks and my home exercise equipment. It is time to dust off the elliptical machine, pop in a DVD and get ready for spring with renewed energy and focus! If this works, I will be the one picking up my farm share with a spring in my step, showing off my reinvented self.

Reinvention or resolution, it is the outcome that matters.
