Revivified Clock Counts as a Minor Miracle

Long after all hope seemed lost, the second hand of a beloved timepiece began ticking away.

"It's about time!" It's a phrase we commonly use when we've been impatiently waiting for something to happen. It could also be used to refer to the little device sitting on the windowsill by my desk. This small clock is indeed about time--and perhaps about rewarded patience.

The clock was a gift from a daughter who has an identical one, except that hers didn't take an extended vacation. The one in our house went on strike a couple of years ago and rejected all offers to establish a mutually acceptable contract. We replaced its batteries (more than once) and examined its mechanism, to the extent we could. All our efforts were rebuffed. A treatment with WD-40, our favorite cure-all, had no effect either. The sullen clock sat here, unresponsive, for two years, during which I kept wondering why we didn't just bid farewell to it and move on. But it is an attractive member of the household and we don't easily discard things. (Understatement!).

Last week I glanced at our little non-performer, taking up space on the windowsill, and  lo! the second hand was moving! Incredulous, I set the correct time and waited a few hours to see if accurate time would be maintained. Right on the nose!! And, as of this moment, the re-vivified clock is ticking happily along.

If I ever doubted the existence of miracles, this little clock is doing its best to disabuse me of those doubts. You may tell me that the WD-40 has finally worked its way into the moving parts or provide another explanation of why the clock is functioning again, but I'm still awe-struck. Could the message be that everyone benefits from a bit of R&R now and then?
