QUAKERTOWN - Families in Upper Bucks have a lot going on, and the Quakertown YMCA at 401 Fairview Avenue is designed to cover much of it in one stop. From October 15 through October 31, River Crossing YMCA is waiving the join fee for new members, and members receive lower program rates, with openings available for a November 1 start. That makes this a good moment to bring everyone in the household along.

"We know rising costs are putting a lot of pressure on people right now, especially families, so we want to do all we can to make sure everyone knows the Y is here for you," said Trish Feinthel, chief operations officer for River Crossing YMCA. "Self-care, affordable youth sports and senior connections are just as important, if not more important than they ever have been, so we want to bring as many people into that fold as possible."

The Quakertown wellness center is a multi-level space with weights and cardio equipment, now including a Y Circuit room, a compact area with an easy-to-follow workout routine that suits newcomers. Circuit-style training is a practical way to hit the U.S. recommendation of muscle-strengthening on two days a week alongside 150 minutes of moderate-vigorous activity. After a workout, members can head to a 25-yard lap pool, a family pool with a waterslide, or the sauna, and group exercise classes run seven days a week at no extra charge.

Kids are in for a treat. The new RCY Gymnastics Center, home of Infinity Gymnastics, is brand new in Quakertown, and the class schedule runs from Baby Ninja for ages 12 to 36 months and Kindergym through Level 4. From there, RCY Gymnasts move up to the Infinity Team’s higher levels, featuring statewide and national competition. Other options include CBR Swim Team, karate, NHL Street Hockey, volleyball, and Junior Sixers basketball. Active kids tend to have healthier hearts and bones and better mental health, and organized sport is linked to higher self-esteem and stronger social skills. Swimming is a life skill, too. A case-control study found that formal swim lessons were associated with a lower drowning risk in children ages 1 to 4.

Parents have help close at hand. Drop-in Stay & Play babysitting is available for up to two hours a day, and the branch also has an on-site child care center, before and after school care, and adaptive programs for people with special needs. Membership includes access to every River Crossing YMCA branch, free InBody scans every 90 days, and an app for classes and reservations. Join online or stop by the Quakertown branch before October 31, and plan one family activity for the week ahead.
