Saucon FBLA Students Making a Difference in Community

The members of Saucon Valley High School's chapter of Future Business Leaders of America have been busy with many community service-oriented projects.

Saucon Valley High School teacher and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)Β adviser Chad ShirkΒ recently reported on some of the community service projects the student-members of the group have been busyΒ participating in.

Shirk said Saucon's FBLAΒ chapterΒ currently hasΒ 105 paid members whoΒ are actively involved, which is aboutΒ 13 percentΒ of the school'sΒ entire student population.

He said 71Β students will be participating in an upcomingΒ regional FBLAΒ competition, competing in 39 different business events against local schools.

In addition to Shirk,Β Kim Flueso is also a sponsor to the group.

They listed the following recent accomplishments by Saucon's chapter of FBLA as worthy of highlighting:

1. Students successfully ran and operated an Alex's Lemonade StandΒ in Hellertown that raised $1,533, which was donated specifically for leukemia research (in honor of 16-year-old Saucon Valley studentΒ Angel Mojica, who lost his battle with the diseaseΒ in July).

2. As part of Lower Saucon Township's Adopt-A-Road program, the SVHSΒ FBLA has adopted Bingen Road. "We had 14 kids that spent theirΒ SaturdayΒ picking up trash/litter," Shirk said.Β "As we were cleaning up the road, we had people stop and applaud the students for giving back to the community."

3. The FBLAΒ has 31 students assigned to organize and collect gifts for underprivileged families this season as part of a special Holiday Giveaway.
