A major energy project that could result in savings for the Saucon Valley School District was proposed at the school board's most recent meeting.

Joe Solomon, president of Provident Energy Consulting, presented the Saucon Valley School Board with energy visions for the future during the board's Aug. 28 meeting.

Part of Solomon’s proposal, which if accepted may take shape as early as next summer, is to replace a 50-year-old generator at the and to apply the use of natural gas at the elementary and middle schools. Solomon’s plan also included a strategy for replacing 15 year-old rooftop units.

“This is equipment that will have to be replaced at some point,” said Solomon. “It may be cost-effective to take action sooner rather than later.”

In addition to the energy project, the board continued its discussion of the . Board member Susan Baxter reported on the recent conversations had by the committee that was formed at the previous meeting, which is comprised of Baxter, Fellin and board member Charles Bartolet.

“We feel it is in our best interest not to have a policy for naming facilities after individuals,” said Baxter.

Baxter explained that this would not rule out potential donations given to the district by individuals, such as trees or benches.

In other business, the board announced the district’s hiring of Cynthia Basila as its new principal, effective Dec. 17.

Basila was formerly principal of Tunkhannock Middle School in the Poconos.
