Violent crime was used as the main criteria. A formula was used to come up with a crime score by taking the number of total crimes and dividing that number by the town's population.

"This way, safer cities got the lowest score, and those more vulnerable to crimes got higher scores," Elite said.

The cities that did not report crimes to the FBI and those under 5,000 residents were not included in the list.

Lower Makefield Township, with a population of 32,768 residents, had 10 violent crimes, according to the FBI crime stats. That made its crime score 0.31.

Northampton Township, with a population of 39,289 residents, had 12 violent crimes, according to the FBI crime stats. That made its crime score 0.31.

Upper Southampton Township, with a population of 15,038 residents, had six violent crimes, according to the FBI crime stats. That made its crime score 0.40.
