9-Year-Old Willow Grove Girl Killed Crossing Street

The driver did not immediately stop at the scene, according to police. The incident happened in Abington.

A 9-year-old girl was killed Wednesday night while crossing Rockwell Road in Abington, police said. The driver did not immediately stop at the scene, according to police.

The girl, who is from Willow Grove, was crossing the road with a caretaker at 8:55 p.m. to get to a parked car, police said.

A car traveling northbound towards Old Welsh Road hit the child.

After hitting the child, the driver, an 18-year-old Abington resident whose name has not yet been released by police, continued to the Bottom Dollar Food Store parking lot on Davisville and Moreland roads.

There, the driver called her mother, who arrived at the scene of the accident and told officers her daughter was involved. The driver’s mother informed officers of her location.

The girl who was hit was transported to Abington Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the incident is being jointly conducted by Abington Police and Montgomery County Detectives.
