Crooked Billet Elementary Invites the Community to Volunteer in Classrooms
Senior adults invited to recruitment breakfast to learn about sharing their life experiences with Crooked Billet students on Sept. 11.

Every member of our community has something to teach the next generation. Crooked Billet Elementary School and Senior Adults for Greater Education (S.A.G.E.) are partnering to bring those community experiences into the classroom.
Residents in Hatboro-Horsham over the age of 55 are invited to find out more about volunteering their time in the local school district, while sharing the lessons and experiences they’ve learned in life on September 11 at Crooked Billet Elementary School at 9:30 a.m.
“I’m excited about opening our school up to more community members,” Principal Kelli Sendel said. “The teachers are ready to bring volunteers into the classroom and have them participate in the unique events we have at Crooked Billet.”

Community members will be treated to a breakfast, where they will hear about the past successes of S.A.G.E. in the district, the process of volunteering, and the many benefits for all the groups involved. At the end, the members will be invited to tour the school and learn about the opportunities at Crooked Billet.
“Everyone benefits from participating,” S.A.G.E. Executive Director Beryl Katz said. “The benefits are enormous for the children, the teachers and the volunteers. It’s a win-win.”

S.A.G.E. was introduced at Hallowell Elementary School last year, where it was integrated into classroom lessons, presentations and extra-curricular activities. Katz said while many volunteers started at only one hour a week at the school, many continued to expand their time there. She said by the end of the school year, 16 volunteers totaled over 500 hours of time helping at Hallowell.
S.A.G.E. works with school district throughout the region to bring older community members into the buildings for volunteer activities. For students, it is the opportunity to learn from another generation. For volunteers, it is a chance to see how education has changed since they were in school. Together, they build relationships, create new experiences and connect with their community.
Any residents interested in attending the recruitment breakfast can call Crooked Billet Elementary School at 215-420-5300. Community members interested in volunteering must be over the age of 55, submit for school clearances, and participate in an orientation.
Crooked Billet Elementary School is located at 101 Meadowbrook Avenue in Hatboro.
