Will Lipiflow Help With Symptoms of Dry Eyes After LASIK surgery?

Lipiflow might be the answer if you are suffering symptoms of dryness after having laser vision correction surgery. While eyedrops provide temporary relief, if you have undiagnosed eyelid disease, you may benefit from Lipiflow treatment and, in many cases, not need to put eyedrops in as frequently or eliminate the need for eye drops altogether.

If your symptoms are more than mild, the first test will use the exclusive LipiView Ocular Surface Interferometer. If you’ve ever had a comprehensive eye exam, LipiView will be similar.

LipiView captures images of the tear film, processing 14 million pixels per second – more than a billion data points in total. This non-invasive process takes less than 5 minutes, and provides your doctor with information to further assess your tear film.

LipiFlow® is intended for the application of localized heat and pressure in adult patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye or lipid deficient dry eye.

Unlike traditional treatments (e.g., warm compresses, artificial tears, wetting drops, ointments and expensive prescription eye drops) that address dry eye symptoms, LipiFlow treats the root cause, the obstructed Meibomian glands. If left untreated, dry eye can lead to further ocular deterioration and additional eye problems. The goal of unblocking the glands is to allow them to resume their natural production of lipids required for a healthy tear film. LipiFlow treatments can only be provided by a licensed physician.

How LipiFlow Works:

· LipiFlow uses a disposable eye piece to apply controlled heat to the inner eyelids and intermittent gentle pressure to the outer eyelid.

· LipiFlow facilitates the release of lipids from the blocked Meibomian glands allowing the natural flow of lipids to resume.

· LipiFlow is an in-office procedure that takes approximately 12 minutes. Both eyes can be treated simultaneously.

What to Expect from LipiFlow: In a controlled clinical trial, a majority of patients treated with LipiFlow reported an improvement in overall dry eye symptoms at 4 weeks.
