The sites will be staffed by law-enforcement officers, who will accept prescriptions and over-the-counter tablets, capsules, inhalers, liquid medications, creams and ointments. Needles and intravaneous medications will not be accepted.

Drugs can be in their bottles with the labels removed or in plastic bags. This year, Montgomery County has more locations taking part in the event than at any time since it began in 2010.

"Each time we conduct a Drug Take Back Day, we collect more and more medications, which means that people are getting the message that they need to get these unwanted medications out of their homes and have them disposed of in a safe manner," Steele said.

He said people also are becoming more aware of the link between over-prescription of drugs and the opioid epidemic and urged residents to only take what they need of medications and dispose of the rest. Since 2010, more than 50,000 pounds of medications have been collected and disposed of in Montgomery County.

In April, nearly 8,000 pounds of drugs were collected in one day.

If someone is unable to attend Drug Take Back Day, a list of permanent disposal locations is available at the Montgomery County District Attorney's office website.
