HATBORO, PA —The end is near for a 94-year borough institution.

Residents on The Voices of Hatboro Facebook page shared a letter they received from Gamburg's with Patch that the longtime furniture store will be going out of business.

The envelope of the letter advises preferred customers of "advanced notice" for the store's closing.

"Dear Valued Customer and Neighbor, for 94 years and three generations, Gamburg's Furniture has been proud to serve the good people of Eastern Pennsylvania and beyond with premier home furnishing needs," the letter states. "So it is with reserved excitement that I have made the decision to retire and close Gamburg's Furniture."

Lynne Hordych, the store's office manager for 30 years, told Patch Thursday afternoon that the store is a second home for her.

"It's sad," she said. "I come here every day. It's going to be hard. So many people have worked here for a long time.

She said the store will probably close sometime in the fall.

Gamburg's states in the letter that it has "a short window of time to see off all remaining inventory."

The letter, signed by owners Sid and Joyce, thanks customers for their "loyalty and support we have received over the many years."

"We couldn't have done it without you," the letter said.

The store was offering preferred customers a special customer sale through Monday before the announcement is made to the general public, the letter states, "with reduced prices like never before."

Some commented on the Voices of Hatboro page that they are sad to see the store go.

"We've lived in our home for 40 years, and every piece of furniture in our house including pictures has been purchased at Gamburg's," one resident posted on the Facebook page. "Will definitely miss them."

Gamburg's is considered to be one of the properties seeking development under the borough's new Town Center ordinance.

Officials said Thursday that the borough has not received any applications pertaining to the Gamburg property and no notification from the business that it is closing.

In late January, the Hatboro Borough Council approved a mixed-use ordinance for a section of York Road from Byberry Road to Montgomery Avenue.

The ordinance allows developers to make proposals that could see building heights go to 60 feet provided they meet certain guidelines, meaning that the downtown district could have taller buildings and apartments.

If an application to develop the 107 S. York Rd. Gamburg's property is received, it will be reviewed by the borough's planning commission and the public would have time to provide comments and feedback on the project, borough officials said.

Plans would have to be approved by the Borough Council before any development could take place.
