HALLOWELL ELEMENTARY INVITES COMMUNITY TO FALL FOR READING ON NOV. 3

Event Emphasizes Family Fun and Brain Training for Enhanced Reading

HORSHAM Hallowell Elementary School’s annual Fall for Reading event is giving parents and the community a look at how the next generation is learning to become avid readers. Treadmills and a community garden factor into the learning process. The Hallowell community invites all who are interested to join the elementary school students and their teachers to learn about new approaches to promote reading.

On Monday, November 3, from 6:00-8:00 PM, community members and students can explore the school’s garden, sample treats that have been prepared from the garden’s harvest, visit classrooms and enjoy a good book with a storyteller.

“This is an important event. It helps parents to understand the strategies that are being used in the classroom to promote reading. Many of these techniques can be used at home. We have found that interactive reading approaches encourage students to read more and to retain more of what they read,” said Tami Eldridge, a reading specialist at Hallowell.

Eldridge noted that visitors may be surprised to see the variety of settings where reading takes place-on the treadmill, while seated on an exercise ball and other unusual sites away from the student’s desk.

The fun begins at 6:00 PM on November 3, 2014, at Hallowell Elementary School, 200 Maple Ave., Horsham.
