HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —Just seven years after opening, Hallowell Elementary School needs a new roof.

At its meeting on Monday night, the Hatboro-Horsham School Board unanimously approved spending $2.9 million to replace the roof at the school, which opened in 2017.

The new roof will be partially paid for with a $575,000 grant. The district will also legally go after the contractor to recoup costs, arguing that the roof failed permanently.

School officials said the roof failed prematurely due to its asphalt shingles, which cracked, lost their granular surface, and had inconsistent sealing that led to gaps that allowed for water penetration.

A new metal standing seam roof will replace the current roof.

Work is expected to take place next summer.

School officials said that the roofs of the Crooked Billet and Keith Valley schools were inspected recently and that no issues were reported.
