Hatboro Council To Consider EMS Tax Increase (ICYMI)

Money from the bump in millage would go to Second Alarmers, which provides emergency response in Hatboro and other municipalities in MontCo.

HATBORO, PA — Hatboro's council is asking for residents' input on a proposed property tax increase to help fund emergency crews in the borough.

Borough Council will consider an EMS Tax proposal at its meeting on Monday, Dec. 17. The tax has been proposed by Second Alarmers Rescue Squad, which provides emergency and rescue services in Hatboro and six other municipalities in Montgomery County.

The proposed .12-mill increase would amount to an average annual cost of $18 per household in the borough, according to Hatboro officials. All funds generated by the increase would go to Second Alarmers "to help keep their operations running smoothly," the borough said in a social media post.

On its website, Second Alarmers has posted answers to frequently asked questions about the proposal.

The nonprofit organization says it is financially strapped in part because it is required to write off millions of dollars it is owed each year due to Medicare policies and other regulations. Patients who have been transported by Second Alarmers currently owe the organization $1,295,000, the organization says.
