Hatboro-Horsham 5th Grader, Inspired By Africa Book, Raises $2k

HORSHAM, PA -- When one local fifth grader got done reading about South Sudan, he wanted to do something about the issues the book presented.

Carter Murray read A Long Walk to Water over the summer, a short novel based on the true story of a Sudanese Lost Boy who walked for days to find water and food after escaping from a school shooting.

Carter felt a surge of compassion and worked with Mrs. Williams, the school’s student council advisor, to collect loose change during the months of December and January at Crooked Billet, the school district said.

This money was raised to offset the cost of a water drill in South Sudan so that the residents there have access to clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and more.

A total of $2,084.50 was raised, more than doubling his initial goal of $1,000.

Carter then led an assembly at Crooked Billet in December, and presented at the school’s annual Acceptance Day in January to educate our students and staff about the lack of clean water in South Sudan.

Well done, Carter!
