Hatboro-Horsham Students Disciplined After ICE Protest

Hatboro-Horsham Schools Superintendent Scott Eveslage provided details about the protest process at a recent school board meeting.

HATBORO / HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — Some students who participated in an ICE protest last month were disciplined by the school district, its superintendent has revealed.

At a recent Hatboro-Horsham School Board meeting, Schools Superintendent Scott Eveslage addressed feedback the district received and clarified its stance after a student protest against ICE actions on Feb. 19.

That protest led to several students being disciplined, although Eveslage did not disclose how many students or why they were disciplined.

Students approached the administration about holding a demonstration protesting ICE activity that led to two people being killed in January in Minnesota.

“They communicated respectfully and sought to coordinate with school officials to ensure the event remained safe and consistent with school expectations,’’ Eveslage said.

Students said they would remain on campus, follow the code of conduct, and protest peacefully, the superintendent added.

The school district had informed students that any violation of the student code of conduct would result in disciplinary action.

“We did not sponsor, organize, promote, or endorse the protest,” Eveslage said. “We did not encourage participation. We are obligated to remain viewpoint neutral.”

The protest was held during lunch period, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Horsham Township Police were not present for the protest, and no arrests were made.
