HATBORO, PA — Borough officials are trying to transform the downtown district.

The plan was to approve mixed-use development in the York Road business district, allowing for apartment complexes to be built. (One has opened and another is under construction.)

Borough officials believed in approving the Town Center ordinance that new apartment dwellers would come from those who work in the Philadelphia region and seek cheaper housing, especially in a downtown with walking distance to the train station.

Officials also hoped that new businesses would pop up to serve these new residents and bolster foot traffic for all borough businesses.

Main Street Matters, and that is supported in a grant the borough is seeking.

The Main Street Matters program recently opened for municipalities to apply for funding, officials said.

The program is designed to support downtown cores and surrounding neighborhoods with tools to create healthy, vibrant, and welcoming communities. Funding was available to support revitalization efforts in planning, business support, and aesthetic improvements.

The Hatboro Borough Council authorized staff to complete a grant application that was submitted on Aug. 30.

While borough officials hope to get the grant, the council is working with staff and business owners to continue to discuss funding in the 2026 municipal budget for business support.
