HATBORO, PA — Residents of a senior-living community in Hatboro have raised nearly $8,000 toward scholarships that will help the young people who work with them every day.

Over the past year, residents of Wesley Enhanced Living Upper Moreland raised the money through hosting various fundraising events at the community, located at 2815 Byberry Rd. in Hatboro.

It finances the ServeWEL scholarship program, which provides financial assistance to student employees of the community. Now in its 13th year, the scholarship has awarded more than $90,000 to student employees.

"The ServeWEL scholarship program is special. In support of this program, our residents take the initiative to raise funds dedicated to assisting the junior team members, as they pursue their high school or college education," said Maureen Casey, executive director of both Wesley Enhanced Living Upper Moreland and Burholme communities. "There’s no better feeling than seeing the grace and kindness this program inspires."

Casey said the scholarship program fosters and strengthens the relationships between senior residents and local young people.

"From year to year, our thoughtful residents develop and cultivate a unique bond with our staff," she said. "Seeing young students grow throughout their employment really makes a positive impact on all of those here."

The students each will receive a $1,000 scholarship to put toward their college education. This
year’s recipients plan to attend schools including LaSalle University, New York University,
Temple University, Towson University, University of Pittsburgh and Florida Atlantic University.

The nonprofit Wesley Enhanced Living communities serve more than 1,100 residents, with locations in Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties providing care ranging from independent living to memory care and rehabilitation.
