Project Blue Light To Honor Fallen Officers In Horsham

The annual observance began in 1988 when the mother of a fallen Philadelphia police officer placed a blue light in her window in his honor.

HORSHAM, PA — The law-enforcement community in Horsham will pause on Tuesday to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Project Blue Light is a nationwide recognition of police officers who have died while serving. This year's event is set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Horsham Township Municipal Complex, at 1025 Horsham Rd.

The annual observance began in 1988 in Philadelphia when Dolly Craig wrote a letter to COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors) saying she planned to honor her late son-in-law, Philadelphia officer Danny Gleason, by putting a blue light in her window for the holiday season.

In 1999, the Horsham Township Police Department planted a tree in Deep Meadow Park, next to the municipal complex, as a memorial to fallen officers. The evergreen tree is decorated every holiday season with 1,000 blue lights representing law-enforcement officers.

Along with the blue lights will be one white light for each Montgomery County officer who has died in the line of duty. Currently, there are 28 white lights on the tree.
