Gardner began his career in Hatboro in August 1984 as a dispatcher for the Hatboro Police Department. He later became a part-time police officer in 1986 and one year later became a full-time officer.

He didn’t stop there and soon after was not only promoted to corporal but then promoted to Detective Corporal and in August 2002 he was promoted to police chief.

Chief Gardner has had a long and distinguished career in Hatboro, receiving several awards and commendations throughout his 40 years of service.

In his personnel file, there are examples of his superlative public service, too numerous to count, letters from organizations, community members, and community leaders thanking Gardner for the help and services that he provided, chamber officials said.

"He is a caring and compassionate leader who has been there for his employees and the people of Hatboro," the chamber said. It is with great honor that the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce recognizes the superb leadership of Police Chief James Gardner with the first “Life of Service “Award."
