HATBORO, PA —The borough recently received funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for riparian buffers at Eaton Park, Hatboro Little League, and the Pennypack Property.

Riparian buffers are strips of vegetation planted next to streams.

The buffers have many benefits, such as streambank stabilization, erosion, and sediment control, and filtration of nutrients and other pollutants.

They also reduce the impact of flooding, habitat, and food for wildlife and pollinators, and provide shade for streams.

The locations of the riparian buffers were mainly selected to help stabilize the streambanks in those areas, borough officials said.

Residents may see the presence of green tubing in areas where the new trees were.

This tubing is temporary to protect from wildlife and rough weather. The tubes will be removed by the DCNR when the trees are able to stand on their own.
