Surprised Lady Hatter Softballers Earn District One Playoff Berth

Do you believe in resurrection?

Hatboro-Horsham High School's softball team was set to turn in its uniforms on Friday, but the Lady Hatters got a reprieve when they were announced as one of the 24 teams in the PIAA District One playoffs on Thursday night.

H-H thought its season was over on Wednesday afternoon after a disappointing 7-4 loss at Garnet Valley, but the Lady Hatters were one of five teams from the Suburban One League/Continental Conference selected for the field.

The Lady Hatters will face Perkiomen Valley on the road Monday in Collegeville at 4 p.m. Hatboro-Horsham is the No. 21 seed, while PVHS is the No. 12 seed.

If that school sounds familiar, Perkiomen Valley traveled to No. 2-seeded Hatboro-Horsham for the second round of last year's playoffs and gave the Lady Hatters everything they wanted before H-H pulled off a 6-5 win.

Nicole Casagrand's hard single off PVHS first baseman Rachel Hamm scored Carlie Johnson from third base to end the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

Johnson led off the seventh with a scorching grounder down the third-base line, hustling her way to second for a double and was moved along by Jen Cader's ground out to second to set up the winning play.

A win over Perkiomen Valley would advance the Lady Hatters through to the second round at No. 5 seeded Pennsbury on Wednesday.

The playoff bid extends the careers of three H-H seniors, Charlotte Coulson, Daria Edwards and Megan Hallock.

Hatboro-Horsham defeated Pennsbury twice in 2011 for the Lady Hatters' first District One title and their second state championship when Coulson and Edwards were freshmen at the school. Hallock transferred from South Carolina for her senior season.

No. 4 seed Spring-Ford is the top-seeded team in Hatboro-Horsham's part of the bracket and would be a likely quarterfinal opponent for H-H, PVHS, or Pennsbury, with a state-playoff berth on the line on Friday.

Continental Conference champion Souderton is the No. 3 seed, with defending District One champ Central Bucks East at No. 8, North Penn at No. 9 and Central Bucks South at No. 15.

If North Penn defeats Council Rock South on Monday, the Maidens would travel to CB East on Wednesday.

CB South hosts Owen J. Roberts in the first round on Monday, with a game at No. 2 Avon Grove awaiting the winner in Wednesday's second round.

Souderton will face the survivor of host West Chester East and Cheltenham on Wednesday. The Indians should have a strong chance to reach the semifinals with an extremely favorable draw.
