HATBORO, PA —The new Wawa convenience store at the corner of Horsham and York roads now has an opening date.

Mayor Tim Schultz and Borough Manager Diane Hegele told Patch that borough officials received an email from Wawa regarding an opening date for the 5,585-square-foot convenience store next week.

Both said Wawa plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce could not be reached for comment.

The store has caused controversy for years after the borough lost a court battle to try and prevent it.

The borough council also recently rejected a proposal by Wawa to sell liquor in the store.

Meanwhile, the status of the Wawa at the other end of York Road, less than a mile away, is still up in the air.

The store has operated in the borough for more than 25 years. The property is owned by the Hatboro Baptist Church. An email was sent to the church by Patch as well for a response.

While a new Wawa is open, it doesn't necessarily mean an old one will be closed.

A new Wawa opened on Route 611 in Warrington over a year ago and an older one nearby still operates.

The borough spent years in a zoning battle against Wawa due to a deficiency in Hatboro’s zoning code.

"This process was time-consuming and costly, only for the Borough to lose to Wawa in the end," Hegele has stated.

In late January, the Borough Council adopted a Town Center ordinance in an attempt to have better control over its zoning laws with the main goal of preventing another Wawa.
