Black Bear Spotted In Hatfield, 'Getting A Little Too Friendly'

Police are urging residents to lock up their trash and be mindful about leaving food out.

HATFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — A black bear has been repeatedly spotted in recent days around the Hatfield Township area, and police are warning residents after the bear has apparently become "a little too friendly."

It comes just a few weeks after numerous sightings of a similarly sized bear in high population areas in Chester County, including West Vincent Township.

The Hatfield bear has been spending much of his time recently on N. Hatfield Road. His behavior and familiarity have sparked concern from authorities.

"Let’s work on reminding him of his boundaries," police said. "Bears that find food, begin to get comfortable. The best deterrent is to stand your ground and attempt to get them to move along. Be loud, be present, keep your trash locked away."

Black bears are native to Pennsylvania and their appearance should not warrant any concern, though sightings are far less common in the Philadelphia area.

Residents are asked to be mindful about leaving pet food outdoors, as well as things like bird feeders and loose trash.
