LOWER BUCKS COUNTY, PA —Construction preparations are underway on a $10.6 million project to reduce traffic congestion on a major Lower Bucks County road.

The Bucks County Planning Commission said preparations for the construction of the Langhorne-Yardley Road Intersection Improvements Project in Middletown Township are underway.

The project involves two intersections along Langhorne-Yardley Road: Langhorne-Yardley Road & Bridgetown Pike: The existing signalized T-intersection will be replaced by a single-lane roundabout.

Under the contract, PennDOT’s contractor will construct a single-lane roundabout and realign the roadway; install upgraded traffic signals, stormwater management, ADA curb ramps, signage, and lighting; perform resurfacing operations; and improve mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The proposed roundabout will help decrease vehicular speeds while improving safety and traffic flow. Motorists will be directed to use a detour route once the roundabout construction begins.

Langhorne-Yardley Road & Woodbourne Road:

The northern leg of Woodbourne Road will be reconstructed to improve the alignment at the intersection, auxiliary turn lanes will be constructed on all four approaches, and the traffic signal equipment will be completely replaced and modernized. The widening of the eastern leg of this intersection will also provide for a left turn lane on Langhorne-Yardley Road approaching Erica Drive.

In conjunction with Middletown Township, PennDOT will advance the Langhorne-Yardley Road Intersection Improvements Project in Middletown Township, Bucks County. The Project is focused on improvements to two signalized intersections along Langhorne-Yardley Road:

The intersection approaches and the segment of Langhorne-Yardley Road between the two intersections will be upgraded to provide consistency in terms of lane alignments, lane widths, and shoulder widths.

The project will provide enhanced accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists. Five-foot-wide paved shoulders will better accommodate bicyclists.

There will be pedestrian accommodations at the roundabout and the signalized intersection, and new paved paths along Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road to connect these intersections to the Core Creek Park driveways.

Sidewalks will be constructed along the southern side of Langhorne-Yardley Road between Woodbourne Road and Briggs Road.

Two existing pedestrian crossings will be enhanced through installations of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs): the pedestrian crossing of Langhorne-Yardley Road just east of Briggs Road, and the pedestrian crossing of Woodbourne Road just south of its intersection with the aligned driveways for Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School.

The project also will provide re-paving, new pavement markings, new signs, and stormwater management within the project limits.

James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on the project. The project is financed with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.
