FAIRLESS HILLS - Busy households need a place that makes healthy habits easy to start and easy to keep. The Fairless Hills YMCA at 601 South Oxford Valley Road is built for that. From October 15 through October 31, River Crossing YMCA is waiving the join fee for new members, and members get lower program rates, with classes ready for a November 1 start. One membership can cover workouts, swimming, kids' activities, and a little time for yourself.
The Fairless Hills branch offers a lap pool, a recreational pool and an indoor mixed-use pool, along with a fitness center, a spin studio, a gymnasium, a sauna, and an indoor track. Group exercise classes are free to members. The track is a handy tool for beginners. Walking benefits show up at modest step counts, with gains leveling off around 8,000 to 10,000 steps for adults under 60. Movement also lifts mood, and research on healthy adults has found meaningful reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms linked to regular physical activity. A few laps before work or after dinner is a realistic place to begin.
"We know rising costs are putting a lot of pressure on people right now, especially families, so we want to do all we can to make sure everyone knows the Y is here for you," said Trish Feinthel, chief operations officer for River Crossing YMCA. "Self-care, affordable youth sports and senior connections are just as important, if not more important than they ever have been, so we want to bring as many people into that fold as possible."
For kids, the schedule is full. Members can sign up for free classes such as Kids Yoga, Dodgeball, and Powerplay, and families can choose gymnastics from Kindergym Jr for ages 18 months to three years up through Level 2, NRG Swim Team groups, youth pickleball, volleyball and Junior Sixers basketball. Research has found that physically active children and teens tend to have better fitness, bone health and mental health. Parents also get a break, with drop-in Stay & Play babysitting for up to two hours a day and Parent's Night Out dates on November 27, December 11, December 18, January 8, January 22, February 5 and February 19. Day Off School camps help when the school calendar and the work calendar do not match.
The Newtown YMCA at 190 South Sycamore Street, inside Chandler Hall, gives members a wellness center with a full set of strength and cardio equipment, open locker rooms, and personal training to help build a plan that fits their goals. The branch also hosts an on-site child care center, which offers year-round care and education for children from six weeks to five years old and summer enrichment, along with sports classes and gymnasium programming available through the activity finder. The branch does not have a pool, and members can swim at any other River Crossing YMCA location. Membership to the Newtown branch also includes off-site group exercise classes. River Crossing YMCA recently announced that at the end of the year, the Newtown branch will be relocating to a new location, which has not yet been officially released.
Members of either branch receive access to all River Crossing YMCA branches, free InBody scans every 90 days, and an app for classes and tracking. Join online or stop by the Fairless Hills or Newtown branch before October 31. Start with one swim, one class and one kids' activity, and add more as the routine settles in.
